X-ray investigation of the inner structure of two small (20 cm x 7 cm) painted "tablets", made of wood, and recognised as an artwork of Gentile da Fabriano, an important painter of the XIII century.
Digital radiography was obtained with estimated one hundred times less dose than with conventional film.

CONCLUSIONS: An alternative scanner system for high resolution and low dose digital radiography has been tested. MTF curve shows that our system has a significant region above 5% MTF where resolution is better than 200 µm. The system has a strong sensitivity to low flux X-ray radiation. For this reason it is possible to obtain a significant reduction of the absorbed dose. This feature may be interesting for medical applications, even if improvements in speed are required for that task. An extended length version of the detector is under development at Department of Physics. Modularity and mechanical scanning devices make this system virtually unlimited for what concerns the linear dimensions of the object under investigation, without changing its sub-millimeter resolution potential.
